Student Academy Award for A Siege

After 27 years a Hungarian diploma film was awarded again by the AMPAS.

István Kovács’ 'A Siege' is one of the 3 winners of the 45th Student Academy Awards in Narrative category. The award ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 11 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

'A Siege' sets in 1994 at Sarajevo, after the Bosnian War. The main charachter is a lonley, bosnian woman, whose has only one aim: find water. She would like to wash her hair, before her awaited date… 'A Siege' is the diploma film by István Kovács, a graduate of the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest.

'A Siege' was premiered in Hungary at the Friss Hús festival, the international premiere was in competition at the Sarajevo Film Festival. The short film was supported by Hungarian National Film Fund.

This year, the Student Academy Awards competition received a total of 1,582 entries from 278 domestic and 122 international colleges and universities, which were voted upon by a record number of Academy members.  The 2018 winners join the ranks of such past Student Academy Award winners as Patricia Cardoso, Pete Docter, Cary Fukunaga, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Trey Parker, Patricia Riggen and Robert Zemeckis. All Student Academy Award-winning films are eligible to compete for 2018 Oscars. Past winners have gone on to receive 59 Oscar nominations and have won or shared 11 awards.
