1. Mattie, the Goose-boy – animated Hungarian feature film, directed by Attila Dargay

Digital remastering supervised by Irén Henrik D.O.P. With an admission rate of 2.5 million, Mattie the Goose-Boy has become the most popular feature-length Hungarian cartoon ever.

Mihály Fazekas’ narrative poem features funny characters: in Döbrögi, all evil is revealed with hilarious irony in the quintessence of country bailiffs and overseers. The director smuggled himself into all of his fairytale films: the traits of Mattie’s goose shows similarities. Mattie, the sly and handsome hero of the film, as well as the other characters were designed by Marcell Jankovics.

The moving story of Vuk, the little orphan fox, has remained the most beloved feature-length Hungarian cartoon ever. Having captured the public as a TV series, the film version welcomed a total of over 2 million viewers. The director Attila Dargay did not turn away from Walt Disney’s traditions, which he held in high esteem: both István Fekete’s touching story and Dargay’s cheerful characters appealed to children’s minds.

Saffi, Attila Dargay’s third highly successful fairytale film, takes place in the last days of Turkish occupation. Raised with Gypsies, the young aristocrat Jónás Botsinkay and the pasha’s daughter Saffi (and her cat of the same name), raised by a witch, adventurously fall in love. The romantic story, as typical of Dargay’s fables, abounds of lovely animal characters, and parodying, hilarious dialogues. The dubbing performances, too, have become iconic by now.

The inhabitants of the Great Forest are plagued by Zero, the king of villains. He wants to sell the forest sheltering the animals. But Captain, the brave sheriff, and his crew, Ede Eleméri and Goliath, stand on their guard, and Zero in vain keeps appearing in the disguise of various semblances, he will be caught and exposed at last.
