After WWII, in Budapest, a lonely man and an orphan teenage girl find their way back to life through love.
ALADÁR is 42, lost his wife and two children in the camps but keeping himself together while working as a gynecologist.
KLÁRA is 16, still hasn’t got her period yet. She is still waiting her father and mother back from…well, she only knows they are “war prisoners”. So her grandma takes her to see dr. Aladár. The two of them find something in each other that they’ve been missing for years.
And as they get closer and closer, they both get better and better. But as the Communist Party and the Soviet Empire takes over in Hungary, their loving and pure father-daughter relationship is not well seen anymore…. A lyrical story of the healing power of love in the midst of national conflict, lost and trauma, Those Who Remained reveals the healing process of Holocaust survivors through the eyes of a young girl in post-World War II Hungary. The film is based on the novel by Zsuzsa F. Várkonyi, published in 2004.
